About the Book

What does it take for marriage to become a place of peace, safety and spiritual growth?

Most people enter marriage carrying sincere intentions and a genuine desire to love well. Yet love can remain present while communication becomes strained, emotional distance grows, trust is weakened or the same conflicts continue without meaningful resolution. Couples may share faith, responsibilities and family life while still longing to feel heard, understood and emotionally secure with one another.

The Sakinah Model: Sacred Bonds, Secure Hearts offers a compassionate and practical way to understand what helps a Muslim marriage flourish.

Grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah, informed by established psychological research and shaped by years of clinical work with individuals and couples, the book presents marriage as both a sacred trust and a living relational system. It helps readers look beneath surface disagreements to understand the emotional needs, protective patterns, vulnerabilities and relational conditions influencing the way spouses respond to one another.

At the heart of the book is The Sakinah Model of Marriage, illustrated as a sanctuary. Rahmah, or mercy, forms its foundation. Amanah, Aman and Iman provide the pillars of trust and responsibility, relational safety and shared faith. Mawaddah, Islah and Libas address loving connection, meaningful repair, intimacy, dignity and protection. Istikhlaf invites couples into partnership and shared purpose, while Ihsan calls them towards God-conscious excellence in the way they relate. Barakah is understood as Allah’s bestowed goodness and beneficial overflow, received with gratitude and du‘a.

The book also addresses difficult realities with honesty and care, including emotional neglect, resentment, betrayal, harmful uses of religious language, the demands of justice in polygyny and the long work of rebuilding after rupture.

The Sakinah Model is written for people preparing for marriage, newly married couples, spouses seeking to strengthen an established marriage and those trying to understand distance or distress within their relationship. It can be read individually or together as a couple. Therapists, counsellors, educators, imams and others who support Muslim marriages and families will also find a clear framework for understanding relational wellbeing through an Islamically grounded lens.

This book is an invitation to move towards a marriage rooted in mercy, truth, safety, responsibility, connection and shared worship. A marriage in which both spouses can remain fully human, learn how to find their way back after hurt and help one another move towards Allah and Jannah.

Sakinah is more than the absence of conflict. It is the settled peace that becomes possible when a marriage is tended with Rahmah, Amanah, Aman, Iman and Ihsan.
